Braces and Invisalign® clear aligners can correct many orthodontic issues, but some conditions can be confusing especially when they sound similar, like overbite and underbite.

An Ideal Bite: Occlusion vs. Malocclusion

Occlusion is the way your upper and lower teeth line up when your mouth is closed.

A malocclusion occurs when the teeth don't fit together properly.

Overbites and underbites are two common types of malocclusions. During an orthodontic evaluation, Dr. Shahnaz Hashim will assess how your teeth come together and recommend the most effective treatment.

What Is an Overbite?

Often referred to as "buck teeth," an overbite happens when the upper teeth extend too far forward over the lower teeth.

In a healthy bite, the upper front teeth should cover about 25% of the lower front teeth. When the overlap is greater, it's classified as an overbite.

What Is an Underbite?

An underbite is the opposite of an overbite. In this case, the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth when the mouth is closed.

Also known as mandibular prognathism, an underbite makes the lower jaw appear more prominent.
